What Are Essential Communication Skills For Digital Marketers?

DSM digital School of Marketing - communication

The digital marketing industry consists of people who conduct any type of work online, whether it’s social media or email marketing. In many cases, multiple areas – in a digital marketer’s day – will overlap.

Most of all digital marketing is all about communication. Digital marketing is the practice of communicating a brand’s message to its intended audience. Needless to say, as a digital marketing professional, you’ll need to have a high level of communication in terms of customer service as well as within your internal team.

As a digital marketer, you’ll have the conventional communication responsibilities of a manager in addition to needing to be able to create clear as well as concise campaigns which speak directly to your target audience.

Here are some of the essential communication skills which you need to develop as a digital marketer.

Learn How To Listen

Not only does listening belong on this list, but there’s also a good reason it’s the first one up. Lots of talented digital marketers give – what seemed on the surface – to be a well-received presentation, only to later find out it didn’t really resonate with their intended audience.

In almost all of those cases, it was an issue where the client or stakeholder didn’t feel like the presenter properly addressed the issues they believed had been previously communicated.

Tips:

  • First, listen.
  • Make sure you fully understand the issues/challenges you’re expected to address in the presentation. If not, ask questions and keep listening until you’re crystal clear.

Customer Service Communication Skills

Digital marketers need to be able to guide as well as deliver exceptional customer service.

Gone are the days of traditional advertising as well as short-term effort on behalf of brands. Now, customers require constant reassurance that their purchase matters through consistently nurturing a brand and buyer relationship.

It is necessary for you to be prepared to deal with complaints on social media, face up to common concerns on your blog and then get geared up in order to provide consistent benefits for loyal customers. All of which require experience in customer service.

Here are some examples of customer service communication skills:

  • Empathy and “Mirroring”
  • Effective Listening
  • Positive Body Language
  • Professional Language
  • Personalisation
  • Accurate Information Giving
  • Transparency and Honesty
  • Persuasion

The Art of Brevity

People are busy so you need to get to the point quickly.

Tips:

  • To practise this art, write a one-sentence synopsis of your favourite movie or book (without mentioning the title or main character’s name). Then ask someone to read it and ask if they either guess it or at least find it interesting.
  • Take the time to make it brief. The first draft of anything (presentation, email, promotion, etc.) is usually chock full of information. What does the recipient of your communication actually need to know to make a decision?
  • If you’re presenting a chart on a slide, the headline should tell the viewer the point you’re trying to get across. For instance, when showing a graph about when sales happen, don’t just write “Best Sales Days of the Week.” Instead, write something like “Friday is the Top Sales Day” with a possible subhead (if justified) of “45% of all sales occur Friday”.
