DSM Digital School of Marketing - entrepreneurs

The times we live and work in are challenging and riddled with uncertainty. However, they also present an opportunity to take control. If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, you may find that now is an ideal time to explore paving your own career path—on your own terms.

If you would like to start a business but don’t know where to begin, don’t worry – you’re not alone. In fact, given the new economic environment of our time, more individuals than ever have found the “job” that they thought was waiting for them doesn’t exist.

Other people have come to the conclusion that they would rather create the work they love, created to fit with their own life goals. No matter what the motivation is to be your own boss, you can begin today.

Identify Profitable Start-up Ideas

A successful start-up business begins with an idea. You won’t be able to build a business without one. Here are some creative ways for designing of a product or service:

  • Ask your friends what annoys them.
  • What makes a product or solution profitable? It offers a solution for a problem or frustration that individuals are willing to pay to have alleviated.

As you brainstorm, ask your friends to make a note of the day-to-day things which annoy them. Then go through their lists and then look for problems you may be able to solve.

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

Just because you may have never started a business before does not mean you don’t have the knowledge or qualities required. Tap into what you’ve done and learned in past job positions (sales acumen, customer service skills, technology proficiencies, project management mastery, etc.). Then assess gaps in your abilities and seek training or find professional resources to fill the voids.

Business Planning Improves Your Chances For Success.

Most people don’t plan however it will assist you with getting to market faster. A business plan will assist you with gaining clarity, focus and confidence. A plan does not have to be more than one page. As you note down your goals, strategies and action steps, your business becomes real.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What am I building?
  • Who will I serve?
  • What is the promise I am making to my customers/clients and to myself?
  • What are my objectives, strategies and action plans (steps) to achieve my goals?

Improve Something (Or Make It Cheaper) Than What’s Out There

You really don’t constantly have to develop something which is brand new. If you can offer a pre-existing product at a reduced price point, better quality, or ideally, both, you’ll have plenty of customers. Better yet, there’s obviously an existing demand.

As you go about your day-to-day activities, make a list of everything that you use. After this review the list for something you could improve.
